I build the backend systems other software runs on: distributed job platforms, databases and storage layers, and the runtimes underneath programming languages.

Senior Staff Engineer at IonQ in New York, on the platform that runs programs on trapped-ion quantum computers. Before that, a smart-contract language at Symbiont, patient messaging at Pager Health, and a venture-backed startup I cofounded. I studied physics and math, which turns out to be useful here.

Eighteen years as a circuit

Each wire is a track and each gate is a role or project, placed by year. Vertical links mark where one thing led to another. Select a gate to read about it.

Work

IonQ

2023 to now

Senior Staff Engineer

IonQ builds trapped-ion quantum computers. I work on the job platform, the distributed system that takes a quantum program from submission to result.

  • Introduced distributed tracing to IonQ and built it on OpenTelemetry. It follows a job across its long, multi-service lifecycle, so one trace shows where a job went and where its time was spent.
  • Led the migration of the job platform's primary datastore from MongoDB to PostgreSQL.
  • Core contributor to job-platform operations, multi-region architecture and platform portability.

Symbiont

2018 to 2023

Lead Software Engineer, Platform Scalability and Language teams

Symbiont builds a blockchain platform for financial institutions, with its own smart-contract language, SymPL, written in Haskell. I worked where the language meets its runtime and its data.

  • Led the storage layer for SymPL and its type system, including a DSL for type-safe queries, joins and indexes over contract data.
  • Worked on the language's standard library, test infrastructure and tooling, and on its interface to the custom runtime and the rest of the platform.
  • Tuned Postgres indexing and queries so ledgers with billions of records stayed fast to query.
  • Created a benchmarking framework for contracts and the platform, with reporting and regression tracking.

Pager Health

2015 to 2018

Lead Software Engineer

Pager Health, called Pager when I was there, connects patients to care over chat. I worked mostly on backend services and infrastructure in Node.js, Go and Elixir.

  • Designed and built the real-time chat backend that replaced PubNub.
  • Led a Go and Postgres bot platform that walks patients through structured clinical protocols. That chat and bot architecture later triaged millions of patients a day for COVID-19 symptoms in Colombia.
  • Extended the RabbitMQ worker architecture, normalized schemas across MongoDB-backed services, and built a MongoDB-to-Postgres ETL pipeline for the data science team.

Glimpse

2013 to 2015

Cofounder and CTO

Glimpse was a dating app built on Instagram, so you met people through the photos they already shared. I started it with Elan Miller and Raquel Hernandez, and GV, First Round Capital, Sherpa Capital and several angel investors backed us.

  • Built the native iOS app in Objective-C and Swift, with a focus on performance.
  • Built the real-time messaging service, in Node.js on the Bayeux protocol, with Go services for the hot paths.

We wound it down in 2015, and I wrote about it in Goodbye Glimpse.

DailyBurn

2010 to 2014

Senior Software Engineer

Backend services and infrastructure in Ruby, Node.js and Go for a fitness streaming service.

  • Built the API services for the mobile and TV apps, plus the Samsung Smart TV and PlayStation 3 clients.
  • Built real-time messaging and the Rails, MongoDB and Redis API behind the MealSnap iPhone app.

Earlier

  • 2011 to 2013
    CyborgVision, Cofounder

An iPhone app that recognized your Facebook friends. It won TV Hack Day NYC, was Popular Science's App of the Month, and was covered by Mashable, The Next Web and Gizmodo.

  • 2009 to 2010
    SciMedMedia, Senior Engineer

Rails applications and Linux infrastructure for pharmaceutical clients.

  • 2008 to 2009
    Sagebit, Junior Engineer

Rails projects, Linux administration, and a live-events search engine.

Education

  • 2008
Wabash College, bachelor's in physics and mathematics

Research on simulating viscoelastic fluid flow with the least-squares finite element method.

  • 2018 to 2021
Georgia Tech, graduate coursework in computer science

Operating systems, computer networks, high-performance computer architecture, computer vision, and machine learning for trading.

Talks

After hours

I build small native apps on nights and weekends: a SQL client for Parquet files, a Dokploy dashboard, a Neo Geo emulator, a code calculator for electricians. Each one started as something I wanted for myself.
